STEM
Hsiao-Tzu Tien
Based on her personal experience, to reflect not only the sense of security when being covered and veiled, but also the self-contradictory conflict of feeling fettered and restricted, the performer covers herself with floral-print fabric from head to toe. Moreover, through this image, she tries to discuss the status of being observed by others, from the mental state to the physical behavior.
The elastically stretched floral fabric echoes the Stem and its botanical imagery, as well as symbolizes the conduits supplying nutrients for the artist’s development. Confronting the protection mechanism, the attempt to escape from such restraint; facing the stability and fear, there’s no judgement but an attitude of regarding all of them as the intangible nutrients needed for the advancement of life.
